Characterization of adipose-derived stromal/stem cell spheroids versus single-cell suspension in cell survival and arrest of osteoarthritis progression

Ji-Yun Ko et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that ASC spheroids have better in vitro and in vivo survival and chondrogenic potential, exerting greater regenerative effects for articular cartilage, and arresting the progression of surgically induced OA better than ASCs in single-cell suspension through a paracrine mode of action.

Summary: Spheroid culture provides a three-dimensional environment for cells to better mimic physiological conditions compared to monolayer culture. Continuous innovation in technologies is aimed at enhancing properties of cell spheroids. Future development should focus on improving process control, standardization, scalability, monitoring, as well as advanced methods of spheroid transfer and characterization.

Hydrogel mechanics are a key driver of bone formation by mesenchymal stromal cell spheroids

Jacklyn Whitehead et al.

Summary: Research shows that leveraging the mechanical properties of alginate hydrogels can enhance the osteogenic potential of entrapped MSC spheroids. Compared to elastic alginate, calcium deposition of MSC spheroids was increased in ionically crosslinked, viscoelastic hydrogels.

Recent advances in the design of implantable insulin secreting heterocellular islet organoids

M. Birgul Akolpoglu et al.

Summary: The focus of current research is on overcoming challenges such as islet donor shortage, engraftment, prolonged islet availability, and post-transplant vascularization through the design of 3D cell clusters that can accurately secrete insulin and have superior features. These engineered heterocellular islet organoids aim to address the current obstacles in islet transplantation protocols and have the potential to improve clinical outcomes.

Functional hair follicle regeneration: an updated review

Shuaifei Ji et al.

Summary: The hair follicle is a highly conserved sensory organ associated with various biological functions, including immune response, thermoregulation, sebum production, angiogenesis, neurogenesis, and wound healing. However, constructing functional follicles with cycling activity remains a major challenge for hair research. To address this challenge, researchers are exploring potential cell sources and bioengineering strategies for hair follicle regeneration and functional restoration.
