Performance of MAR (v3.11) in simulating the drifting-snow climate and surface mass balance of Adelie Land, East Antarctica

Charles Amory et al.

Summary: This paper extensively describes a new version of the drifting-snow scheme embedded in the regional climate model MAR, including important modifications such as parameterization for drifting-snow compaction and differentiation of snow density at deposition. Model results show that MAR can accurately capture local drifting-snow frequency and transport, as well as observed climate and SMB variability, suggesting its potential for continent-wide applications.

Diverging future surface mass balance between the Antarctic ice shelves and grounded ice sheet

Christoph Kittel et al.

Summary: The study investigates the sensitivity of the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) to different warmings using simulations with two CMIP5 and two CMIP6 models. Results show that in warmer climates, future surface mass balance over the grounded ice sheet will be influenced, leading to a mitigation of sea level rise through increased snowfall and reduced meltwater run-off. Ice shelves are projected to have stable surface mass balance under CMIP6 ssp126 and ssp245 scenarios.
