On the free radical redox chemistry of 5,6-dihydroxyindole

A. Bernardus Mostert

Summary: The study revealed the key role of quinone methide tautomer in semiquinone free radical production, and provided a new set of pH dependent reduction potential equations. Estimations for various thermodynamic variables were given to lay the foundation for understanding the charge transport properties of poly-indolequinones.

Melanin system composition analyzed by XPS depth profiling

J. V. Paulin et al.

Summary: Melanins, a class of natural pigments, are gaining attention as advanced materials due to their biocompatibility and unique properties. Standard chemical analysis of melanins is challenging due to their insolubility, leading researchers to use XPS as an alternative method. The study demonstrates that XPS depth-profiling method can provide accurate chemical information of both surface and bulk of melanins and their derivatives.

The role of the protein-water interface in dictating proton conduction across protein-based biopolymers

Yuval Agam et al.

Summary: Proton conducting polymers have become essential for energy applications, with research focusing on understanding the proton transport mechanisms through bulk water inside the polymer and at the interface between the polymer and water. Recent studies have shown that protein-based biopolymers, despite their high water content, mainly facilitate proton transport through the protein-water interface.
