Electrochemical performance of Bi2O3 supercapacitors improved by surface vacancy defects

Shiju Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of vacancy defects on the physical-chemical properties of Bi2O3 powders used as supercapacitor electrodes. It was found that the h-Bi2O3 sample with more V'''BiVO++V'''(Bi) defects exhibited better cycle stability and rate performance, attributed to the insertion/extraction process of K+ ions in the surface defects. Furthermore, the high concentration of V'''BiVO++V'''(Bi) defects in the h-Bi2O3 electrode led to improved conductivity and higher specific energy density in an asymmetric supercapacitor configuration.

Defects-rich porous carbon microspheres as green electrocatalysts for efficient and stable oxygen-reduction reaction over a wide range of pH values

Chao Su et al.

Summary: Hierarchically porous carbon microspheres with trace amount of encapsulated cobalt exhibit highly active and stable electrocatalytic performance for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) under wide pH conditions. The catalysts show competitive catalytic activity, superb durability, and methanol tolerance compared to benchmark Pt/C catalyst, even in harsh acidic environments, due to abundant active sites provided by rich surface defects and hierarchically porous structure. The in situ formed cobalt nanoparticles play a crucial role in creating mesopores, high specific surface area, and catalytically active defect sites over the carbon material, further enhancing the ORR activity of the catalysts with negligible cost impact.
