Accumulation of microcapsules derived from coated fertilizer in paddy fields

Summary: Japanese agriculture utilizes a significant amount of plastic, particularly in the form of fertilizer-containing plastic microcapsules. These microcapsules have been found to accumulate in paddy fields at concentrations much higher than those in other countries, potentially impacting the soil environment. Proper assessment of the impact of these high concentrations of microcapsules is necessary for future agricultural practices.

Summary: In this study, researchers proposed the use of lignin and poly(vinyl acetate) as biocoating materials for slow release urea fertilizer, which improved film characteristics and increased nitrogen release time compared to pure polymers. The results suggest that a blend of 25 wt% lignin and 75 wt% PVAc is a suitable biocoating material for producing slow release fertilizers.
