The proposed work introduces a design and study of a Microstrip patch antenna for Ku band operation, utilizing a square patch metamaterial antenna. The antenna is designed to be compact, with higher gain, suitable for higher frequency bands. Through the use of a metamaterial structure and modeling with square patch and pi-shaped reflectors, the antenna achieves precise narrowband operation.
In the proposed work, a design and investigation of Microstrip patch antenna for ku band operation is recommended. A square patch metamaterial antenna was designed and fabricated using Arlon AD 1000 (tm) substrate. The proposed antenna is designed to be compact in size, higher gain and suitable for higher frequency bands. The antenna ground layer is imposed by metamaterial structure, the top radiating layer have square patch with three reflectors of pi (if) shape. The dimension of the radiating patch is 4.6 mmx4.6 mm and the reflectors are 7 mmx0.5 mm, 0.5 mmx6.3 mm, 0.5mmx6.3mm This antenna has been modeled with square patch and pi (pi) shape reflectors to achieve precise narrowband operation. The measured results shows that the square patch metamaterial antenna has a return loss of -15dB at 15.5GHz and -23dB at 19.1GHz, meanwhile it has a gain of 2dB and directivity of 3dB. This antenna was designed for satellite applications such as live broadcasting, naval satellite downlink application, etc.
