Summary: Rabies, a neglected tropical disease, is responsible for an estimated 59,000 human deaths annually. Factors such as low knowledge, dog ownership, non-vaccination of dogs, and presence of jackals are associated with contracting rabies. High density clusters, unvaccinated dogs, and spatial overlap of jackal presence with dog bite cases are identified as risk factors for rabies.

Summary: Rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (R-PEP) is essential in Germany despite the elimination of terrestrial rabies, but deviations from guidelines were found, including missed or incorrect administration of rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) and incorrect vaccination schemes. There is a need for increased education for healthcare workers and the public to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of R-PEP.
