High-pressure experimental constraints of partitioning behavior of Si and S at the Mercury's inner core boundary

Renbiao Tao et al.

Summary: The partitioning behavior of Si and S between liquid and solid in the Fe-Si-S system at high pressure was investigated, and it was found that most of the S partitions into liquid with Si partitioning strongly correlated with the S content in liquid. The study suggests that the S content of Mercury's core plays a crucial role in determining the compositional difference and density deficit between the inner and outer core, with pressure having limited effect on Si and S partitioning behavior.

Rates of protoplanetary accretion and differentiation set nitrogen budget of rocky planets

Damanveer S. Grewal et al.

Summary: The impact of protoplanetary differentiation on life-essential volatiles such as nitrogen and carbon remains uncertain. Experimental evidence shows that nitrogen has a higher siderophilic character under graphite-undersaturated conditions than previously estimated. The growth and differentiation of planetary embryos play a crucial role in the distribution of volatile substances in Earth-like planets during their main stage of growth.

Experimental evidence for hydrogen incorporation into Earth's core

Shoh Tagawa et al.

Summary: This experimental study shows that hydrogen exhibits a strong siderophile behavior under conditions of core formation, and may explain a significant portion of the density deficit and sound velocity excess of the Earth's outer core compared to pure iron. Additionally, hydrogen could be an important constituent in the metallic cores of terrestrial planets or moons with a mass exceeding approximately 10% of the Earth.

Strong shear softening induced by superionic hydrogen in Earth's inner core

Wenzhong Wang et al.

Summary: Research using ab initio molecular dynamic simulations shows that hydrogen-bearing iron and iron-silicon alloys maintain a superionic state under inner-core conditions, resulting in strong shear softening of their shear moduli. Several compositions of hcp-iron-silicon-hydrogen can explain the observed density, velocity, and Poisson's ratio of the inner core simultaneously. This suggests that hydrogen is a significant component of Earth's core and indicates that Earth may have accreted water from chondritic and/or nebular materials before or during core formation.

Liquidus Phase Relations and Solid-Liquid Partitioning in the Fe-Si-C System Under Core Pressures

Masahiro Hasegawa et al.

Summary: Silicon and carbon are considered important light elements in the Earth's core, with the liquidus field of iron shrinking at higher pressures. The inner core is found to likely include hydrogen and not be an Fe-Si-C-S alloy, with the modern core containing less than about 6 wt% silicon.

Mantle plumes and their role in Earth processes

Anthony A. P. Koppers et al.

Summary: Mantle plumes are channels of thermal and chemical upwelling in the deep Earth's mantle, with potentially more than 18 rooted in the lower mantle, as supported by geochemistry of hotspot volcanoes. However, controversies persist regarding the origin, dynamics, and composition of mantle plumes, requiring improvements in seismic imaging resolution and geochemical analysis techniques to better resolve mantle plume structures.
