Ground-State Cooling of Levitated Magnets in Low-Frequency Traps

Kirill Streltsov et al.

Summary: This study presents a ground-state cooling scheme for the mechanical degrees of freedom of mesoscopic magnetic particles levitated in low-frequency traps, using a binary sensor and shaped pulses. By precisely determining the position and momentum of the particle, the method transforms the initial high-entropy thermal state into a pure coherent state, and extracts energy by shifting the trap center. Numerical benchmarks show its suitability for magnetogravitational traps operating at cryogenic temperatures, paving the way for ground-state cooling of micron-scale particles.

Circuit quantum electrodynamics

Alexandre Blais et al.

Summary: Circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED) is an independent and thriving field of research that allows unprecedented detailed study and control of light-matter interaction at the quantum level. It has become essential in current approaches to gate-based digital quantum information processing with superconducting circuits, and also provides a framework for the study of hybrid quantum systems. The coherent coupling of superconducting qubits to microwave photons, dispersive qubit readout, and different regimes of light-matter interaction are key aspects of circuit QED.

Nonlinear Charge- and Flux-Tunable Cavity Derived From an Embedded Cooper-Pair Transistor

B. L. Brock et al.

Summary: In this study, a new device called the cavity-embedded Cooper-pair transistor (cCPT) is introduced, which can tune its resonant frequency through different methods. The research finds excellent agreement between theory and experiment, but faces challenges in dealing with frequency fluctuations comparable to the cavity linewidth. By measuring the power spectral density of these fluctuations, it is discovered that they are primarily caused by 1/f charge and flux noise common in solid-state devices.

Cavity electro-optic circuit for microwave-to-optical conversion in the quantum ground state

Wei Fu et al.

Summary: A research team has developed an integrated superconducting cavity electrooptic circuit based on single crystalline thin-film aluminum nitride with ultra-low microwave and optical losses. They demonstrated efficient bi-directional MO conversion at milli-Kelvin temperatures despite the optical excitation-induced noise. Their study further revealed different mechanisms of light-induced noise generation and provided crucial guidelines for optimizing electro-optic circuits in future hybrid microwave-optical quantum links.

Sympathetic cooling of a radio-frequency LC circuit to its ground state in an optoelectromechanical system

Nicola Malossi et al.

Summary: A complete theory for laser cooling of a macroscopic radio-frequency LC electrical circuit using an optoelectromechanical system is proposed, where an optical cavity cools a mechanical resonator and then sympathetically cools the LC circuit. The study identifies the optimal parameter regime for cooling the LC resonator to its quantum ground state, emphasizing the importance of large optomechanical and electromechanical cooperativity. Additionally, comparable coupling rates of optomechanical and electromechanical interactions are preferred for achieving the quantum ground state.
