Metal-free tellurene cocatalyst with tunable bandgap for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production

Summary: The use of metal-free tellurene as a highly efficient cocatalyst has led to enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate and high quantum efficiency under light illumination. Experimental and theoretical studies have shown that tellurene has a largely tunable bandgap, reduced thickness, abundant active sites, high charge mobility, and strong electronic coupling effects with metal sulfides, which contribute to the improved photocatalytic performance.
