Water level status of Indian reservoirs: A synoptic view from altimeter observations

Praveen Kumar Thakur et al.

Summary: This study aimed to generate long-term water level time series of around 29 geometrically complicated inland water bodies in India using satellite radar altimetry. By analyzing multiple satellite data, the accuracy of the retrieved water level data was validated, showing improvement in accuracy and consistency over time with satellite altimetry technology.

Assessment of trends and multi-decadal changes in groundwater level in parts of the Malwa region, Punjab, India

Sashikanta Sahoo et al.

Summary: The study found that due to uneven rainfall distribution, most agricultural lands in Malwa region of Punjab, India depend on groundwater for irrigation, with a significant declining trend in GWL observed in most wells from 1997 to 2018, especially in the eastern part. This raises concerns about the future of groundwater resources in the highly groundwater-dependent Malwa region.

Probable maximum precipitation estimation over western Iran based on remote sensing observations: comparing deterministic and probabilistic approaches

Mohammad Hossein Merrikhpour et al.

Summary: The study aimed to improve the estimation of 24-h PMP using Gumbel copula based on a moisture maximization method and regional remote sensing algorithm. Results show the importance of considering the dependence structure between extreme PW and PE in the estimation of PMP and the applicability of remotely sensed data, especially for data-scarce regions.

A detailed assessment of meteorological drought characteristics using simplified rainfall index over Narmada River Basin, India

Sabyasachi Swain et al.

Summary: The study analyzed meteorological drought characteristics in the Narmada River Basin, India, finding a high frequency of droughts with more severe impacts in the western region compared to the east. Recent years have shown a significant increase in drought frequency, severity, and persistence in the basin.

Streamflow estimation using satellite-retrieved water fluxes and machine learning technique over monsoon-dominated catchments of India

Deen Dayal et al.

Summary: This study utilized ASCAT soil moisture data to calculate the Basin Water Index (BWI) for six river basins in India over 10 years, and compared its relationship with observed streamflow using random forest technique and other models. The BWI-rainfall-runoff model was found to be the most accurate model, performing very well in four basins and good to satisfactory in the remaining two basins.

Stormwater management impacts of small urbanising towns: The necessity of investigating the 'devil in the detail'

Spencer Browne et al.

Summary: This study focused on analyzing the impacts of small town land cover changes on urban runoff discharge using Wangaratta in Australia as a case study. Despite subtle changes driven by residential growth, the increase in impervious surface area still significantly contributed to an increase in total runoff in the town. The research highlights the importance of detailed fine-scale analyses in small towns and emphasizes the substantial future implications of even minor changes.

A simple machine learning approach to model real-time streamflow using satellite inputs: Demonstration in a data scarce catchment

Ashish Kumar et al.

Summary: Real-time streamflow modeling in regions with limited ground-based hydro-meteorological observations can be challenging, but satellite remote sensing data can help fill the gaps. Machine learning methods, such as Support Vector Machine (SVM), can be employed to model streamflow even with limited real-time data. The integration of soil moisture and corrected satellite rainfall data through SVM significantly improves streamflow estimates, emphasizing the importance of antecedent soil moisture in streamflow generation.
