A History of Molecular Level Analysis of Natural Organic Matter by Fticr Mass Spectrometry and The Paradigm Shift in Organic Geochemistry

William T. Cooper et al.

Summary: Natural organic matter (NOM) is a complex mixture of biogenic molecules with important roles in geological, geochemical, and environmental processes, particularly in response to a warming climate. High-field FTICR MS technology can help identify individual components of NOM mixtures, with great potential for future carbon cycling research.

Online Counter Gradient LC-FT-ICR-MS Enables Detection of Highly Polar Natural Organic Matter Fractions

Limei Han et al.

Summary: The study investigated natural organic matter (NOM) using ESIFT-ICR combined with LC, and applied a counter gradient technique to stabilize solvent conditions. The results showed that the counter gradient method increased TIC intensity and the number of assigned molecular formulas, and revealed more molecular formulas in the CHNO, CHOS, CHNOS formula classes.

Quadrupole detection FT-ICR mass spectrometry offers deep profiling of residue oil: A systematic comparison of 2ω 7 Tesla versus 15 Tesla instruments

Jinfeng Ge et al.

Summary: This study compared the performance of 2 omega detection on a low magnetic field instrument with that of a high magnetic field FT-ICR-MS by characterizing a residue oil sample using both instruments. The results showed that the 2 omega 7T FT-ICR MS provided comparable performance in deep profiling of the complex oil sample, while the 15T FT-ICR MS gave more precise measurements of the sample's elemental compositions.

Organosulfates in atmospheric aerosols in Shanghai, China: seasonal and interannual variability, origin, and formation mechanisms

Yao Wang et al.

Summary: Organosulfates (OSs) are important tracers for secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) and were comprehensively characterized in ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) samples collected in Shanghai in 2015-2016 and 2018-2019. The study found that while the concentration of organic aerosols (OAs) decreased in 2018-2019 compared to 2015-2016, the concentrations of quantified OSs remained similar, suggesting an increased contribution of SOAs to OAs in 2018-2019.
