Study of testing and maintenance strategies for redundant final elements in SIS with imperfect detection of degraded state

Aibo Zhang et al.

Summary: Safety-instrumented systems (SISs) use final elements in a dormant state to perform safety functions, but degradation over time can lead to vulnerabilities. Imperfect state revealing during proof tests weakens the effectiveness of follow-up maintenances. Quantifying the effects of imperfect degradation state revealing is crucial for optimizing testing and maintenance strategies for SISs.

Responsiveness of Multi-Channel IEC-61850 Substation Communication Network Reliability Performance to Changes in Repair Factors

Vonani Clive Mathebula et al.

Summary: The paper presents a method that improves the eigenvalue analysis method by focusing on the incremental responsiveness of the system to imperfect repair factors using absorbing Markov chain and matrix calculus. Results show that while the system is dependent on repair factors, it is perfectly inelastic to repair efficiency factors; diagnostic coverage of the system is critical, with higher elasticity as the factor approaches 100%.

Impact of Imperfect Repairs and Diagnostic Coverage on the Reliability of Multi-Channel IEC-61850 Substation Communication Network

Vonani Clive Mathebula et al.

Summary: The impact of repair efficiency and diagnostic coverage on the reliability of IEC-61850 based Substation Communication Network (SCN) was investigated using Markov and symbolic dynamics based on linear dynamical systems. The results suggest that optimal selection of individual factors can achieve the desired reliability and availability, characterized by the spectral gap on the complex plane. The effectiveness of repair efficiency factors is shown to be dependent on the level of system diagnostic coverage, with noticeable impact at low diagnostic coverage levels.
