Colchicine and SARS-CoV-2: Management of the hyperinflammatory state

Antonio Vitiello et al.

Summary: The global COVID-19 pandemic is ongoing with the licensing of the first Sars-CoV-2 vaccine by the EMA in December 2020. Studies suggest that colchicine, an anti-inflammatory therapy, may be effective at modulating and controlling the inflammatory state associated with severe COVID-19 complications. It is important to conduct well-organized clinical studies to further explore the potential of colchicine in treating and preventing cytokine storms in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Clinical outcomes of patients hospitalized for COVID-19 and evidence-based on the pharmacological management reduce mortality in a region of the Colombian Caribbean

Mara Garcia-Posada et al.

Summary: This study described the clinical characteristics and treatment management of a group of COVID-19 patients from Colombia. It found that main comorbidities related to mortality were obesity and kidney disease, and the colchicine combination therapy showed significant difference in reducing mortality compared to other treatments.

Influence of methodological and patient factors on serum NMDAR IgG antibody detection in psychotic disorders: a meta-analysis of cross-sectional and case-control studies

Alexis E. Cullen et al.

Summary: The study found that higher estimates of NMDAR IgG antibody prevalence were obtained using the live cell-based assay, and seropositivity was more common in patients with psychosis than in controls when this method was used. The effects of illness stage and study quality on heterogeneity were inconsistent, providing clear recommendations for clinicians and researchers on interpreting these findings.

Beneficial effects of colchicine for moderate to severe COVID-19: a randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial

Maria Isabel Lopes et al.

Summary: Colchicine showed benefits in the treatment of COVID-19 patients by reducing the need for supplemental oxygen and length of hospitalisation. It did not necessarily reduce mortality, but was safe and well tolerated with the potential side effect of diarrhea.
