The article highlights the similarities in neurologic symptoms between adults with COVID-19 and children with influenza, suggesting inflammatory or immune-mediated mechanisms may play a key role in encephalopathy.
I read the article by Eden et al. regarding COVID-19 patients with neurologic symptoms with interest.1 It appears the adults with neurologic symptoms, primarily of encephalopathy, are similar to those of children with influenza experiencing encephalopathy-CSF neopterin elevation being a common feature, whereas CSF pleocytosis was only present in a third of patients.2 Influenza-related encephalopathy is believed to primarily be mediated through inflammatory or immune-mediated mechanisms.2
