Evaluation of deep learning algorithms for national scale landslide susceptibility mapping of Iran

Phuong Thao Thi Ngo et al.

Summary: In this study, a national-scale landslide susceptibility mapping of Iran was conducted using recurrent neural network (RNN) and convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithms. RNN algorithm outperformed CNN algorithm in both training and testing phases, with 6% and 14% of Iran's land area being highly susceptible to future landslide events. Additionally, 31% of cities in Iran are located in high and very high landslide susceptibility areas.

How robust are landslide susceptibility estimates?

Ugur Ozturk et al.

Summary: Contemporary landslide research often focuses on predicting and mapping susceptibility to slope failure using generalized linear models, however the impact of sample size, location, or time on model performance remains largely untested. Findings suggest that considering only lower parts of landslides can significantly improve model performance, particularly for medium-sized landslides. Additionally, model performance shows marginal variation when progressively updating and adding more landslide data through time.

The spatial distribution characteristics of coseismic landslides triggered by the Ms7.0 Lushan earthquake and Ms7.0 Jiuzhaigou earthquake in southwest China

Ming Chang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the distribution characteristics of coseismic landslides using eight evaluation factors. It found that high density coseismic landslides occurred in locations where the valley evolved from U-shaped to V-shaped and on slopes with an inclination between 20 and 50 degrees. The research results can be used to predict the distribution of coseismic landslides in future earthquakes in southwest China and provide a scientific basis for emergency rescue efforts.

Local Histogram-Based Analysis for Detecting Land Cover Change Using VHR Remote Sensing Images

Zhiyong Lv et al.

Summary: A new approach based on local histogram-based analysis (LHBA) is proposed to detect land cover changes by inhibiting pseudo changes through defining local histogram trends. This method does not directly measure change magnitude using spectral values but instead focuses on spatial information around each pixel.

Summary: This study presents a feasible alternative method to compile a landslide inventory map using artificial intelligence. The developed LanDCNN model, trained with bitemporal images and DTM, produces the smoothest and most semantically meaningful results among all analyzed cases. The proposed framework is scalable and efficient in handling vast amounts of remote sensing data within a short processing period.

Landslide Mapping Using Two Main Deep-Learning Convolution Neural Network Streams Combined by the Dempster-Shafer Model

Omid Ghorbanzadeh et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of deep learning CNN technology combined with optical data and topographic factors for earthquake-induced landslide mapping. By training CNN streams with different datasets and combining the results, as well as comparing the mapping results through mean intersection-over-union, it was found that using spectral information and slope topographic factors can improve the mapping accuracy. The improvement of the mean intersection-over-union ranged from approximately zero to more than 17%, and the Dempster-Shafer model was effective in combining results from different scenarios.
