Electronic and geometric structure of cationic and neutral chromium and molybdenum ammonia complexes

Benjamin A. Jackson et al.

Summary: High level quantum chemical approaches were used to study the geometric and electronic structures of ammonia complexes. It was found that molybdenum and chromium ammonia complexes differ significantly in geometry, while hexa-coordinated complexes and tetra-coordinated complexes with two ammonia molecules in the second solvation shell are energetically competitive.

Spectroscopic evidence for a gold-coloured metallic water solution

Philip E. Mason et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that metallic water solution can be prepared by doping water with alkali metals, opening up a new approach to achieving a metal-like surface layer of water. Experimental results indicate that a transient gold-coloured layer of metallic water solution can be formed on the surface of liquid sodium-potassium alloy drops under low pressure.

Ground and excited electronic structures of metal encapsulated nanocages: the cases of endohedral M@C20H20 (M = K, Rb, Ca, Sr) and M@C36H36 (M = Na, K, Rb)

Isuru R. Ariyarathna

Summary: High-level electronic structure calculations were conducted to analyze the ground and excited states of endohedral M@C20H20 and M@C36H36 molecules. It was found that these molecules populate different superatomic orbitals in their excited states, and transitions in M@C36H36 require slightly higher energy compared to M@C20H20. Additionally, these superatoms exhibit lower ionization potentials and can be categorized as superalkalis.

Ground and excited electronic structure analysis of XM4 (X = N, P and M = Li, Na) and their anions

Isuru R. Ariyarathna

Summary: High-level coupled-cluster, electron propagator, and multi-reference ab initio methods were used to study the ground and excited electronic states of the XM4 series. It was found that all XM4 species have lower ionization potentials and can be classified as superalkalis. In the ground state, each species possesses a diffuse electron in the periphery, while in excited states the outer electron is promoted to higher-angular momentum orbitals.

Ab initio calculation of electronic and optical properties of CaNiN nitride and the signature of topological properties

Y. Ammari et al.

Summary: In this study, the structural, electronic, and optical properties of nitride ternary phase CaNiN containing nickel (I) and calcium were investigated using density functional theory. It was found that the non-spin polarized state is more stable, and Dirac-cones-like band crossings were observed in the band structure. The study also utilized many-body perturbation theory to analyze optical properties of the compound.

Magnetic deflection of neutral sodium-doped ammonia clusters

J. V. Barnes et al.

Summary: In this study, the setup and performance of a new pulsed Stern-Gerlach deflector for small sodium-doped ammonia clusters have been described. NaNH3 showed expected deflection, while larger clusters displayed smaller deflections, with intracluster relaxation times estimated to be around 200 microseconds. This research aims to improve understanding of the magnetic properties of isolated, weakly-bound clusters.
