Sudden large-volume detachments of low-angle mountain glaciers more frequent than thought?

Andreas Kaab et al.

Summary: Glacier detachments in low-angle glaciers are not rare, often caused by a combination of factors; the soft condition of glacier beds and partial thaw may play a key role in detachment; glacier detachments may represent a combination of glacier surges and ice break-offs from steep glaciers.

Inventory and changes of rock glacier creep speeds in Ile Alatau and Kungoy Ala-Too, northern Tien Shan, since the 1950s

Andreas Kaab et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatio-temporal variability of rock glacier movement in the Ile Alatau and Kungoy Ala-Too mountain ranges in the northern Tien Shan region. The results show a significant increase in speed of fast rock glaciers, with some glaciers showing speeds two to four times higher in recent years compared to the 1950s and 1960s. This suggests a possible increase in sediment and ice fluxes through rock glaciers in the region, and highlights the local variability of rock glacier response to atmospheric warming.

Regional and Altitude-Dependent Estimate of the SRTM C/X-Band Radar Penetration Difference on High Mountain Asia Glaciers

Chao Li et al.

Summary: This study estimated the penetration depth difference of C/X-band radar signals on glaciers in the HMA region, analyzed the spatial characteristics of altitude-dependent penetration depth, and identified a significant linear positive correlation between elevation and penetration depth difference in most regions. These results can serve as important reference data for estimating glacier mass balance in HMA using SRTM DEMs.
