Antimalarial application of quinones: A recent update

Summary: Atovaquone belongs to a class of drugs known as naphthoquinones and is used in combination with proguanil to treat acute, uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum. Various quinone-derived compounds have been studied for their antimalarial properties, with a recent focus on the discovery of novel quinone-based compounds between 2009 and 2020. The compilation of these discoveries is expected to contribute to the development of effective and safe treatments against malaria.
