Mapping and functional characterization of murine kidney injury molecule-1 proteolytic cleavage site

Saranga Sriranganathan et al.

Summary: The shedding of KIM-1 in mice is mediated by the enzyme ADAM10 at the isoleucine I202 cleavage site, which is essential for the phagocytic clearance of apoptotic cells. Mutating I202 to alanine or glutamine significantly reduces KIM-1 shedding and efferocytosis. Additionally, exogenously added shed KIM-1 can rescue impaired phagocytosis, indicating a potential functional role of soluble KIM-1 in modulating efferocytosis during AKI.
