Closed-loop recycling of polyethylene-like materials

Manuel Haeussler et al.

Summary: Plastics are crucial components in modern technology but are often disposed of after use. Chemical recycling offers an alternative to retain high-performance properties, but traditional polyethylene poses challenges due to its inert nature and structure.

From Photoinduced Supramolecular Polymerization to Responsive Organogels

Fan Xu et al.

Summary: The study focused on controlling supramolecular polymerization using photoresponsive stiff-stilbene-based bis-urea monomers in organic solvents, achieving fast light-triggered depolymerization-polymerization and reversible gel formation. Precise control over supramolecular polymerization and gelation was achieved by manipulating the high photostationary states of cis-trans isomerization. The research also revealed a kinetically controlled nucleation-elongation mechanism for temperature-dependent and photoinduced supramolecular polymerization in organic solvents.

Light-Mediated Synthesis and Reprocessing of Dynamic Bottlebrush Elastomers under Ambient Conditions

Chungryong Choi et al.

Summary: A novel grafting-through polymerization strategy was introduced to synthesize dynamic bottlebrush polymers and elastomers using light to construct a disulfide-containing backbone. The key starting material, alpha-lipoic acid (LA), is commercially available, inexpensive, and biocompatible. The resulting bottlebrush elastomers exhibit high gel fractions and tunable shear moduli, with the added benefit of dynamic disulfide bonds allowing for self-healing and on-demand chemical degradation.

Toward polymer upcycling-adding value and tackling circularity

LaShanda T. J. Korley et al.

Summary: Chemical recycling and polymer upcycling offer solutions to the challenges of plastic waste heterogeneity and property reductions, enabling circularity and reducing energy consumption and environmental impacts. The industrial adoption of these approaches is encouraging and plays a critical role in addressing the fate of plastics and advancing next-generation materials design.

Dual closed-loop chemical recycling of synthetic polymers by intrinsically reconfigurable poly(disulfides)

Qi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study introduces an intrinsically recyclable and reconfigurable poly(disulfide) polymer using thioctic acid as feedstock. Through dynamic covalent ring-opening polymerization, a dual closed-loop chemical recycling network is established among TA monomers and two kinds of polymer products, offering prospects for sustainable functional plastics.
