Environmental health risk assessment of heavy metal exposure among children living in an informal e-waste processing village in Viet Nam

Hien Thi Thu Ngo et al.

Summary: The study found that children in the informal e-waste processing village in Vietnam had significantly higher exposure to heavy metals compared to children in the reference village, with cooked rice being the main contributor to their intake. However, risks from drinking water and dermal contact with soil were minimal.

Chemical nature and predominant sources of PM10 and PM2.5 from multiple sites on the Silk Road, Northwest China

Xi Zhou et al.

Summary: The study on PM10 and PM2.5 in four urban sites along the Silk Road in Northwest China found relatively homogeneous spatial distribution and predominant sources of water-soluble inorganic ions and mineral dust. Dust and secondary inorganic aerosols were identified as the main contributors, with higher contributions from dust and factory combustion emission sources compared to other regions of China.

Distribution, bioaccessibility, and health risk assessment of heavy metals in PM2.5 and PM10 during winter heating periods in five types of cities in Northeast China

Yan Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the health risks of six heavy metals bound to PM2.5 and PM10 in the outdoor environment of five types of cities in Northeast China. It was found that Cobalt and Chromium were the most bioaccessible fractions among the heavy metals studied. The estimated daily intake of bioaccessible heavy metals varied among different city types during the heating period, and the non-carcinogenic risks were below the safety threshold, while the cancer risks were within an assumable range for Chromium and Cobalt.

An integrated method for source apportionment of heavy metal(loid)s in agricultural soils and model uncertainty analysis

Yuntao Wang et al.

Summary: This study utilized multivariate statistical analysis, GIS mapping, Pb isotopic ratio analysis, and positive matrix factorization to accurately determine the sources of heavy metals in orchard soil in Karst-regions. The main sources of heavy metals were found to be soil parent materials, fertilizer application, and a mixed source of industrial activity and manure. Uncertainty analysis indicated that heavy metals with lower percentage contributions had higher uncertainty, providing valuable insights for future applications.

Possible application of stable isotope compositions for the identification of metal sources in soil

Liuwei Wang et al.

Summary: Stable isotope measurements hold great potential for identifying metal sources in soil, with specific isotopic signals serving as key prerequisites for source allocation. In particular, zinc and cadmium isotopes are valuable for identifying combustion-related industrial sources, while uncertainties may arise from biogeochemical low-temperature fractionation of other elements. Isotope-based source identification, in combination with other analytical approaches, can offer more accurate results for understanding the temporal changes of metal accumulation in soil systems.

Quantitative source apportionment of heavy metals in cultivated soil and associated model uncertainty

Lei Chai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial distribution, source analysis, and uncertainties of eight heavy metals in cultivated soils in Lanzhou using GIS, PMF, and BS. Some heavy metals exceeded local background values in agricultural soils, with sources identified as natural, industrial, agricultural, and traffic-related activities. Analysis showed lower deviations for certain heavy metals, indicating potential for reduced pollution in cultivated soils and serving as a reference for pollution source allocation in other regions.
