Electrospun porous bilayer nano-fibrous fish collagen/PCL bio-composite scaffolds with covalently cross-linked chitooligosaccharides for full-thickness wound-healing applications

Pathum Chandika et al.

Summary: The study fabricated novel bilayer nanofibrous scaffolds composed of fish collagen (FC) and poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) via electrospinning, with the covalent attachment of chitooligosaccharides (COS) using carbodiimide chemistry. The high FC content nanofibrous scaffolds showed functional activity in cytocompatibility analysis, making them suitable for full-thickness wound-healing applications. The assessment of hydrophilicity, swelling, and mechanical integrity confirmed the significant potential of COS-containing FC-rich FC/PCL (FCP) nanofibrous scaffolds for tissue-engineered skin implants for rapid skin regeneration.

Human galectin-3: Molecular switch of gene expression in dermal fibroblasts in vitro and of skin collagen organization in open wounds and tensile strength in incisions in vivo

Peter Gal et al.

Summary: The study shows the potential of galectins-1 and -3 in wound healing, particularly in promoting dermal fibroblast and keratinocyte functions. Topical treatment with Gal-1 or Gal-3 resulted in increased collagen score in rat excisional wound repair, and Gal-3-treated wounds exhibited higher tensile strength after 21 days of healing. Further testing mixtures of galectins with other compounds, like TGF-beta 1, is warranted.
