Emergence and spread of novel H5N8, H5N5 and H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4 highly pathogenic avian influenza in 2020

Nicola S. Lewis et al.

Summary: Analyses of highly pathogenic H5 viruses from poultry outbreaks across a wide Eurasian region since July 2020, including the Russian Federation, Republics of Iraq and Kazakhstan, and recent detections in migratory waterfowl in the Netherlands, revealed a variety of H5Nx subtypes posing a threat to poultry production, food security and veterinary public health.

Genetic Characterization of H5N8 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Viruses Isolated from Falcated Ducks and Environmental Water in Japan in November 2020

Ahmed Magdy Khalil et al.

Summary: Two genetically identical highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAIVs) of subtype H5N8 clade 2.3.4.4b were isolated from falcated duck (Anas falcata) feces and environmental water collected at an overwintering site in Japan. These isolates showed high genetic similarity with H5N8 HPAIVs recently isolated in South Korea, a distant part of Japan, and European countries, suggesting the potential role of falcated ducks in the dissemination of HPAIVs.
