Overview of biological ice nucleating particles in the atmosphere

Shu Huang et al.

Summary: Biological particles in the Earth's atmosphere play a crucial role as ice nucleating particles, influencing cloud and precipitation formation, and regional climate. Research has shown the ice nucleating properties and controlling factors of biological particles from various sources, yet there remain uncertainties and open questions for further investigations in this field.

Influence of sampling approaches on physical and geochemical analysis of aeolian dust in source regions

J. R. C. von Holdt et al.

Summary: This study compared three different methods for characterising mineral dust at emission sources, demonstrating that different sampling techniques can lead to varying representations of dust characteristics. Standardized techniques are crucial for meaningful comparisons, while accurate characterisation methods remain a priority within the discipline.

The seasonal cycle of ice-nucleating particles linked to the abundance of biogenic aerosol in boreal forests

Julia Schneider et al.

Summary: The study reveals a pronounced seasonal cycle of ice-nucleating particles (INPs) in a boreal forest environment, with minimum concentrations in winter and maxima in early and late summer. The observed seasonal dependency of INP concentrations and prevalent types are likely driven by the abundance of biogenic aerosol. New mechanistic descriptions and parameterizations based on Ice Nucleation Active Surface Site (INAS) approach provide insights into the variability of INPs in boreal forest environments throughout different seasons.

Size-resolved atmospheric ice-nucleating particles during East Asian dust events

Jingchuan Chen et al.

Summary: Asian dust is an important source of atmospheric ice-nucleating particles (INPs), but the freezing activity and sensitivity to particle size are poorly understood. This study reports the first size-resolved INP measurement of airborne mineral dust during East Asian dust events. The nucleation efficiency of dust particles increases with particle size, while the INP concentration first increases rapidly and then levels off due to a decrease in the number concentration of larger particles. New parameterizations for INP activity based on the size-resolved nucleation properties of Asian mineral dust particles were developed for a wider temperature range and can be easily applied in models.
