Exploring correlations in genetic and cultural variation across language families in northeast Asia

Hiromi Matsumae et al.

Summary: The study found that grammatical structure correlates with population history (genetic history) and suggests relationships that arose before the formation of current families. The results indicate that grammar might be a cultural indicator of population history while also demonstrating differences among cultural and genetic relationships that highlight the complex nature of human history.

Cultural extinction in evolutionary perspective

Hanzhi Zhang et al.

Summary: Cultural diversity is disappearing rapidly, with 90% of languages likely to become moribund or extinct by the end of the century. Cultural extinction does not necessarily involve genetic extinction or death, but rather results from the disintegration of social entities and discontinuation of cultural behaviors. Studying cultural extinction can be done on different timescales, with frequency-dependent costs and benefits being key factors to consider.
