Optimizing tactical harvest planning for multiple fruit orchards using a metaheuristic modeling approach

Javier E. Gomez-Lagos et al.

Summary: This study proposes a mixed integer linear programming model to support tactical decisions during the harvest season in order to reduce total costs. By developing a GRASP metaheuristic method to solve real cases of the harvest problem, it was found that the metaheuristic produced a solution with relatively lower costs in less computational time.

Centralized and distributed optimization models for the multi-farmer crop planning problem under uncertainty: Application to a fresh tomato Argentinean supply chain case study

M. M. E. Alemany et al.

Summary: Imbalance in crop supply and demand leads to market price volatility and uncertainty, especially for fresh crops. This imbalance is due to uncertainty in agriculture, perishability of fresh crops, and lack of coordination among farmers. Integrating individual farmers' planting and harvesting decisions in multi-farmer supply chains allows assessment of their performance and impact on the entire supply chain.

Harvesting and evacuation route optimisation model for fresh fruit bunch in the oil palm plantation site

Chun Hsion Lim et al.

Summary: The paper examines sustainability issues in the oil palm plantation industry, presenting a mathematical model to determine the shortest harvest route. The vertical rectangular plantation layout was found to significantly reduce travel distance, providing a critical solution for small agricultural enterprises.

Blueberry supply chain: Critical steps impacting fruit quality and application of a boosted regression tree model to predict weight loss

Anastasia Ktenioudaki et al.

Summary: Blueberries have become increasingly popular due to their nutritional benefits and sensory characteristics. However, maintaining quality and extending shelf-life requires refrigerated temperatures and high humidity, which are often lacking along the supply chain. Poor temperature management leads to quality deterioration and increased waste/losses. The critical steps in the blueberry supply chain include shipping to distribution centers, store display, and consumer handling. A model was built to predict weight loss using different temperature-time scenarios, highlighting the impact of supply chain conditions on fruit quality and shelf-life.
