Phytochemical conjugation as a potential semisynthetic approach toward reactive and reuse of obsolete sulfonamides against pathogenic bacteria

Shasank S. Swain et al.

Summary: The emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens has increased global hospitalization costs, morbidity, and mortality. The development of effective antibacterial drugs is crucial, with the sulfonamides class being a historical success. Exploring the potential of phytochemicals as alternative antibacterials and the hybrid drug concept combining inactive sulfonamides and phytochemicals could lead to innovative solutions in antibacterial drug discovery.

Microbial community dynamic shifts associated with sulfamethoxazole degradation in microbial fuel cells

Binghan Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation of SMX and the response of microbial communities to different initial concentrations of SMX in MFCs. It was found that the highest SMX removal efficiency was achieved at 5 mg/L, while high concentration of SMX inhibited electron transfer. The 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing revealed significant shifts in anode biofilm communities with different initial SMX concentrations in MFCs.

Different acetonitrile degraders and degrading genes between anaerobic ammoniumoxidation and sequencing batch reactor as revealed by stable isotope probing and magnetic-nanoparticle mediated isolation

Yujiao Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, active acetonitrile degraders in wastewater activated sludge were successfully identified using stable isotope probing and magnetic nanoparticle mediated isolation. Different active degraders were found between short-term ANAMMOX and SBR, with MMI significantly enriching more degraders for low-assimilation substrates.

Evaluation of a continuous flow microbial fuel cell for treating synthetic swine wastewater containing antibiotics

Dongle Cheng et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of a double-chamber microbial fuel cell (MFC) in treating synthetic swine wastewater containing sulfonamide antibiotics. Results showed that the MFC operated better under the sequential anode-cathode mode, with higher removal efficiency of pollutants, although the removal efficiency of antibiotics still needs improvement. Antbiotics exerted toxic effects on microorganisms in the MFC.

Evaluation of an intermittent-aeration constructed wetland for removing residual organics and nutrients from secondary effluent: Performance and microbial analysis

Jia Li et al.

Summary: The study proposed a novel intermittent-aeration constructed wetland for tertiary treatment which showed better removal performance of pollutants compared to non-aeration CW, mainly due to the higher abundance and diversity of bacterial community caused by oxygen supply. High-throughput sequencing revealed that phyla Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were key in simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal, with other vital families also detected. Oxygen supply upregulated metabolism pathways, enhancing biodegradation potential for contaminant removal.

A critical review of the symbiotic relationship between constructed wetland and microbial fuel cell for enhancing pollutant removal and energy generation

Atieh Ebrahimi et al.

Summary: Constructed wetland technology and Microbial Fuel Cell technology can be combined to improve wastewater treatment methods. Integrated CW-MFC systems increase wastewater treatment efficiency through phytoremediation, enhance MFC power generation through wetland plants, and reduce wetland greenhouse gas emissions due to electrogenic bacteria dominance.
