Multi-stage heat-pipe heat exchanger for improving energy efficiency of the HVAC system in a hospital operating room

Ragil Sukarno et al.

Summary: Efficient heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are necessary for hospital operating rooms to meet specific thermal comfort requirements. Heat-pipe heat exchangers (HPHE) with multiple rows and varying air-inlet conditions were tested to determine their effectiveness and energy recovery capabilities. Results showed that increasing air-inlet temperature and the number of rows improved HPHE effectiveness, while higher air-inlet velocity reduced effectiveness. The epsilon-NTU method is useful for analyzing HPHE systems, which can improve HVAC efficiency and reduce emissions by utilizing cold-air exhaust for heat recovery.
