This article reviews the technological pathways in agriculture digitalization and literature on the Internet of Things, providing insights on technological choices and sustainability of research projects.
Introduction. In the field of research, we are familiar to employ ready-to-use commercial solutions. This bibliographic review highlights the various technological paths that can be used in the context of agriculture digitalization and illuminates the reader on the capacities and limits of each one. Literature. Based on a literature review that we conducted, we describe the main components of the Internet of Things. Also, we analyzed the different technological pathways used by researchers to develop their projects. Finally, these versatile approaches are summarized in the form of tables and a methodological flowchart of communication protocols choices. Conclusions. In this article, we propose a methodology and a reflection on the technological choices and their implication on the durability and valorization of research projects in the field of smart agriculture.
