Alkali lignin and sodium lignosulfonate additives promote the formation of humic substances during paper mill sludge composting

Weiwu Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that adding AL and SLS in paper mill sludge composting significantly increased the content and degree of polymerization of humic substances, which was attributed to their promotion of low molecular weight lignin depolymerized products and acceleration of the transformation of quinone-like substances.

Evaluation of reaction mechanisms and emissions of oily sludge and coal co-combustions in O2/CO2 and O2/N2 atmospheres

Huihuang Zou et al.

Summary: The study characterized the co-combustion reaction mechanisms and performances of oily sludge and coal in oxy-fuel and air atmospheres, finding that oxy-fuel combustion slightly worsened the ignition and burnout temperatures compared to air, with increased oxygen concentration enhancing the combustion characteristic index. Using the master-plots method, the three combustion stages were best described by diffusion, interfacial reaction, and random nucleation growth models, independent of heating rate, oxygen concentration, and atmosphere type. Co-combustion of 70% oily sludge and 30% coal reduced NO and SO2 emissions, providing insights for achieving cleaner and more efficient co-combustion performance and operational optimization.

Method of smoldering combustion for refinery oil sludge treatment

Cheng Zhao et al.

Summary: Smoldering combustion has been shown to be feasible for treating refinery oil sludge, leading to odorless residue with reduced volume and no petroleum hydrocarbons. Water and oil can be recovered from the off-gas, with the recovered oil having a higher calorific value for potential reutilization. However, further purification is needed for the noncondensable off-gas containing SO2, NOx, H-2, CO, and H2S. Factors affecting the smoldering performance, such as moisture content, filler to oil sludge ratio, and airflow rate, have been explored in this study.

Co-combustion behavior of municipal solid waste and food waste anaerobic digestates: Combustion performance, kinetics, optimization, and gaseous products

Chen Wei et al.

Summary: The study investigates the co-combustion behavior of food waste digestates (FWD) with municipal solid waste (MSW) using thermogravimetric and Fourier transform infrared (TG-FTIR) analysis. Co-combustion with MSW improved the combustion performance of FWD, with the experimental combustion indexes exponentially enhanced as the heating rate increased. The study also found that the optimal operating condition for co-combustion was achieved at 540.4 degrees C, 40 K/min and MSW proportion of 0.95.
