Microscopic equation of state of hot nuclear matter for numerical relativity simulations

Domenico Logoteta et al.

Summary: The study extends the microscopic nuclear EOS to finite temperature and arbitrary nuclear composition, describing hot beta-stable nuclear matter and computing various structural properties of nonrotating PNS. The EOS is also used in dynamical simulations of a spherically symmetric CCSN.

AT2017gfo: Bayesian inference and model selection of multicomponent kilonovae and constraints on the neutron star equation of state

Matteo Breschi et al.

Summary: The joint detection of the binary neutron star merger on August 17, 2017, through the gravitational wave GW170817, short gamma-ray burst GRB170817A, and kilonova AT2017gfo, marks a milestone in multimessenger astronomy and provides new constraints on the neutron star equation of state. Observational data favor non-spherical geometries and multi-component models, resulting in constraints on the binary mass ratio and reduced tidal parameter. The predictions from AT2017gfo combined with those from GW170817 constrain the radius of a NS of 1.4 solar masses at 12.2 +/- 0.5 km (1 sigma level), with potential for further strengthening through improvements in kilonova models using numerical-relativity information.

Limiting masses and radii of neutron stars and their implications

Christian Drischler et al.

Summary: This research combines chiral effective field theory (chi EFT) with observations of neutron stars to study high-density matter, offering new constraints on the maximum mass and radius of objects in dense regions. The study suggests that changes in the speed of sound may need to be considered at densities above twice the nuclear saturation density.

On the Maximum Mass of Neutron Stars and GW190814

Daniel A. Godzieba et al.

Summary: Motivated by the recent discovery of a compact object in the binary merger GW190814, this study revisits the question of the maximum mass of neutron stars. By using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach, the researchers generated millions of equations of state to infer upper bounds on the maximum neutron star mass. The study shows that these upper bounds are only dependent on relativity and causality, and not influenced by nuclear physics uncertainties, offering constraints on the equation of state of dense matter. The implications for GW190814 are also discussed.

On the Nature of GW190814 and Its Impact on the Understanding of Supranuclear Matter

Ingo Tews et al.

Summary: The observation suggests that the compact object has a mass of 2.50-2.67M99.9%, and even with relaxed constraints on the maximum mass of neutron stars, the probability of a binary black hole origin remains around 81%. Analysis of the allowed region in the mass-radius diagram for neutron stars indicates that the scenario with a neutron star as the secondary object would require a rather stiff equation of state.
