Tick-borne encephalitis virus in Ixodes ricinus (Acari: Ixodidae) ticks, Tunisia

Wasfi Fares et al.

Summary: Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) has been found in Ixodes ricinus ticks collected from northwestern Tunisia, marking the first report of TBEV in ticks from North Africa within the Palearctic region. Further studies are needed to assess the public health significance of TBEV in North Africa.

Metagenomic Profiling of Viruses Associated with Rhipicephalus microplus Ticks in Yunnan Province, China

Junming Shi et al.

Summary: Ticks, especially Rhipicephalus microplus, in Yunnan Province are found to carry a variety of viruses, including some important ones that are widely prevalent in the region. These viruses may be infectious to cattle and can induce specific antibodies, indicating the importance of further research on their pathogenicity and natural circulation.

Identification of a new orthonairovirus associated with human febrile illness in China

Jun Ma et al.

Summary: A new Orthonairovirus, Songling virus (SGLV), was identified in patients bitten by ticks in Heilongjiang Province, China. SGLV displayed similar features to other Orthonairoviruses and formed a unique clade within the Tamdy Orthonairovirus in the Nairoviridae family. Infection with SGLV caused symptoms like headache, fever, depression, fatigue, and dizziness in hospitalized patients, with 69% developing virus-specific antibodies in the acute phase, indicating its association with human febrile illness in China.

Serological and molecular study of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus in cattle from selected districts in Uganda

Stephen Balinandi et al.

Summary: The study revealed high prevalence of anti-CCHF antibodies in cattle from all five study districts, confirming exposure to CCHFV. Factors such as female gender, increasing age, and higher tick burden were associated with CCHFV seropositivity.

Serological evidence of single and mixed infections of Rift Valley fever virus, Brucella spp. and Coxiella burnetii in dromedary camels in Kenya

Mathew Muturi et al.

Summary: The study found high levels of exposure of northern Kenyan camels to zoonotic pathogens, highlighting their importance in disease epidemiology. Immediate investments in disease surveillance and control strategies are necessary, along with further research into the role of camels in zoonotic disease transmission.
