Unique immunological profile in patients with COVID-19

Stefania Varchetta et al.

Summary: The study found abnormal immune responses in COVID-19 patients, including exhaustion of NK cells and CD8(+)T cells, elevated levels of IL-6, and excessive secretion of inflammatory cytokines by monocytes. Patients with poor outcomes exhibited more severe immune dysregulation.

Aging in COVID-19: Vulnerability, immunity and intervention

Yiyin Chen et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic originating from Wuhan in December 2019 has had far-reaching health and socioeconomic impacts worldwide. The disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 is highly heterogeneous, with age, gender, and comorbidities playing key roles in disease severity and outcomes. Aging and dysregulation of immune function are thought to contribute to the increased vulnerability of older adults to severe COVID-19. Further research on immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection, particularly in different age groups, is crucial for understanding disease heterogeneity and developing effective vaccines.

Profiling B cell immunodominance after SARS-CoV-2 infection reveals antibody evolution to non-neutralizing viral targets

Haley L. Dugan et al.

Summary: Analyzing the evolution of memory B cells (MBCs) against SARS-CoV-2 is crucial for understanding antibody recall upon secondary exposure. Single-cell sequencing was used to profile SARS-CoV-2-reactive B cells in COVID-19 patients, revealing enrichment of SARS-CoV-2 spike-specific cells in the memory compartment and highly mutated variable genes in endemic HCoV-reactive antibody-secreting cells. Additionally, MBCs exhibited pronounced maturation to NP and ORF8 over time.

Characteristics and Outcomes of Patients 80 Years and Older Hospitalized With Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

Christopher Nabors et al.

Summary: Patients aged 80 years or older with COVID-19 often present with multiple comorbidities and atypical clinical symptoms. Cardiovascular manifestations at presentation include new arrhythmia, stroke/intracranial hemorrhage, and elevated troponin. During hospitalization, a significant proportion of these patients require intensive care, renal replacement therapy, and vasopressor support, with an all-cause mortality rate of 47%.
