A muramidase from Acremonium alcalophilum hydrolyse peptidoglycan found in the gastrointestinal tract of broiler chickens

Carsten Ostergaard Frederiksen et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the peptidoglycan hydrolysis by a microbial muramidase from the fungus Acremonium alcalophilum in vitro and in the gastrointestinal tract of broiler chickens. The hydrolysis of peptidoglycan was studied using helium ion microscopy, reducing end assay, and mass spectroscopy, showing the release of hydrolysis products and increase in soluble peptidoglycan. Peptidoglycan hydrolysis in chicken crop, jejunum, and caecum samples was measured by quantifying the total and soluble muramic acid content, with a significant increase observed in the soluble muramic acid upon inclusion of the microbial muramidase in the diet.

Molecular and Pathophysiological Links between Metabolic Disorders and Inflammatory Bowel Diseases

Chang-Kee Hyun

Summary: There is considerable comorbidity between metabolic disorders such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Dysfunction in the intestinal barrier and pro-inflammatory responses in the intestinal immune system are key factors linking the pathogenesis of these diseases. Disrupted gut microbial composition and alterations in gut microbiota-derived metabolites are also closely related to the development of both metabolic disorders and IBD.
