Thermal and mechanical abuse of electric vehicle pouch cell modules

Summary: This paper reports thermal and mechanical abuse experiments on electric vehicle lithium ion modules to study thermal runaway in lithium ion batteries under different abuse conditions and at different SOC. The experiments suggest that both low SOC and high SOC are hazardous and could lead to violent vapor cloud explosions. Cell voltage cannot be relied upon as a warning of thermal runaway.

Microbial technologies show promise in removing metal ions from WEEE with less cost and no addition of toxic chemicals, making them environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional methods. Biohydrometallurgy practices for leaching critical metals from waste lithium ion batteries and biotechnological methods for recovering these metals from aqueous streams are important areas of research in this field.
