Smallholder Farmers' Perceptions, Adaptation Constraints, and Determinants of Adaptive Capacity to Climate Change in Chengdu

Robert Becker Pickson et al.

Summary: This study found that smallholder farmers were aware of the negative impacts of climate change on their livelihoods, mainly in terms of changes in climatic conditions affecting rice production. The farmers felt constrained by factors such as unpredictable weather, limited resources, and lack of information, which hindered their adoption of climate change adaptive strategies. Various resources and technology significantly influence smallholder farmers' capacity to respond to climate warming, highlighting the need for policymakers to consider these factors in designing effective adaptation measures.

Impact of Climate Change on the Production of Coffea arabica at Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Sigrun Wagner et al.

Summary: Adapting coffee production to climate change is a significant challenge, as highlighted by a study on Mt. Kilimanjaro which found that despite an increase in total annual precipitation, farmers still face droughts due to a shift in seasons. The impact of climate change on coffee production is evident during flowering, maturation, and harvest stages, emphasizing the need for tailored adaptation strategies.

Health impacts of climate change on smallholder farmers

Byomkesh Talukder et al.

Summary: The health of smallholder farmers is crucial for food and nutritional security for two billion people. This paper identifies and discusses the health impacts of climate change on smallholder farmers, including communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases, mental health, and occupational health issues. Recommendations are made to address the increasing health impacts of accelerating climate change on smallholder farmers, which could hamper the realization of Sustainable Development Goals.

High aboveground carbon stock of African tropical montane forests

Aida Cuni-Sanchez et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the aboveground carbon stock of a montane African forest network is comparable to that of a lowland African forest network, and is two-thirds higher than default values for these montane forests. The research provides country-specific montane forest AGC stock estimates modeled from the plot network, aiming to guide forest conservation and reforestation interventions. The findings emphasize the need to conserve these biodiverse and carbon-rich ecosystems.

Determinants of smallholder farmers' adaptation options to climate change in a coffee-based farming system of Southwest Ethiopia

Girma Eshetu et al.

Summary: The study on smallholder coffee farmers in Jimma zone, Ethiopia, shows that adaptation measures to climate change include adjusting planting dates, changing crop varieties, tree planting, and mixed farming. Factors affecting farmers' decision to adapt to climate change include access to weather forecasts, formal extension services, education level, farm size, and income sources.
