Phytoliths, pollen, and microcharcoal from the Baringo Basin, Kenya reveal savanna dynamics during the Plio-Pleistocene transition

Chad L. Yost et al.

Summary: This study investigates vegetation changes and fire impacts in the hominin activity area from 3.29 to 2.56 million years ago through examining phytoliths, pollen, and microcharcoal contents. Results show periodic fluctuations in woody vegetation cover before 3.1 million years ago, with subsequent low wood cover and oscillations between tall-grass and short-grass savanna controlled mainly after this time.

Beyond arrows on a map: The dynamics of Homo sapiens dispersal and occupation of Arabia during Marine Isotope Stage 5

Samuel Luke Nicholson et al.

Summary: Arabia played a crucial role in the global settlement of Homo sapiens, with Green Arabia offering a favorable environment for occupation. Through a synthesis of archaeological, palaeoclimate, and ethnographic data, a model for the occupation of Green Arabia has been developed, shedding light on human adaptability and migration patterns in fluctuating environments.

Stratigraphy and Chronology of Sodicho Rockshelter - A New Sedimentological Record of Past Environmental Changes and Human Settlement Phases in Southwestern Ethiopia

Elena A. Hensel et al.

Summary: This study presents the first results of sedimentological, geochemical analyses and radiocarbon dating at Sodicho Rockshelter in the southwestern Ethiopian Highlands, providing evidence of high altitude settlement during the chronostratigraphic gap of MIS 2 and subsequent time slices. The excavation revealed layers dating back to around 27 ka, including settlement phases of Late Pleistocene and Holocene hunter-gatherers, unveiling information on environmental changes. The multiproxy approach used helped establish a general stratigraphy of the site, showing a variation of allochthonous and autochthonous geogenic deposits, and anthropogenic accumulation processes.

Origins of modern human ancestry

Anders Bergstrom et al.

Summary: New findings in palaeoanthropological and genomic records have reshaped our understanding of the origins of modern human ancestry. The article outlines three key phases in the evolution of modern human ancestry, from the global expansion of modern humans to their interactions with Neanderthals and Denisovans, the African origin of modern human diversity, and the complex separation of modern human ancestors from archaic human groups. It argues that there is no single point in time when modern human ancestry was limited to a specific birthplace, and that the appearances of defining traits of Homo sapiens align with a variety of evolutionary histories.

The Middle to Later Stone Age transition at Panga ya Saidi, in the tropical coastal forest of eastern Africa

Ceri Shipton et al.

Summary: The Middle to Later Stone Age transition is a critical period of human behavioral change, with little consensus on when it occurred, the geographic patterning of its emergence, or how it is manifested in stone tool technology. Through a study of the cave site of Panga ya Saidi in Kenya, it is found that the Later Stone Age represents new ways of using stone tools with a focus on edge sharpness over durability.

Innovative Homo sapiens behaviours 105,000 years ago in a wetter Kalahari

Jayne Wilkins et al.

Summary: The study revealed that human behavioral innovations in the interior of southern Africa did not lag behind those near the coast, and these innovations may have developed in a wet savannah environment. This challenges the dominant narrative that ties modern human origins to coastal regions and suggests a revision of models linking behavioral innovations to the exploitation of coastal resources by our species.

Paleo-ENSO influence on African environments and early modern humans

Stefanie Kaboth-Bahr et al.

Summary: The study reveals a close correlation between moisture availability in Africa and ENSO variability, likely driven by changes in Earth's eccentricity. Low-latitude insolation is identified as a key driver of pan-African climate change, impacting vegetation and mammal evolution.

Orbital Influence on Precipitation, Fire, and Grass Community Composition From 1.87 to 1.38 Ma in the Turkana Basin, Kenya

Chad L. Yost et al.

Summary: The Turkana Basin is a key locality for studying human origins, with high resolution climate and vegetation reconstructions providing insights into the link between hominin evolution and environmental change. The study analyzed microcharcoal and phytoliths from a drill core in the basin, finding predictable patterns of concentration changes with distance from shore and linking fire variability to orbital climate forcing.

An Early Holocene Lithic Assemblage from Dibe Rockshelter, South-Central Ethiopia

Hila Ashkenazy et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes lithic material from Dibe rockshelter in the Arsi lowlands, Ethiopia, revealing occupation by hunter-gatherers at the onset of the Holocene and extensive exploitation of regionally available siliceous rocks in older layers; similar reduction patterns and toolkits across the sampled sequence suggest continuity in lithic tradition.

Hydroclimate changes in eastern Africa over the past 200,000 years may have influenced early human dispersal

Frank Schaebitz et al.

Summary: A drying trend in East Africa followed by cycles of high millennial to centennial climate variability between 200,000 and 60,000 years ago may have influenced the dispersal of human populations. The reconstructions of climatic and environmental conditions contribute to debates about early human dispersal factors within and beyond Africa. The multi-proxy paleoclimate record from Chew Bahir in Ethiopia reveals two modes of climate change associated with specific human behaviors.
