Controlling the Surface Oxidation of Cu Nanowires Improves Their Catalytic Selectivity and Stability toward C2+ Products in CO2 Reduction

Zhiheng Lyu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that controlling the surface oxidation of copper nanowires can greatly improve their C2+ selectivity and stability in the electrochemical reduction of CO2. The formation of a relatively thick, smooth oxide sheath can increase surface roughness and generate defects and cavities, leading to high yields of C2+ products and improved catalytic stability.

Isotropic Iodide Adsorption Causes Anisotropic Growth of Copper Microplates

Myung Jun Kim et al.

Summary: This study reveals the mechanism of forming Cu microplates by adding iodide ions in Cu nanowire synthesis. The addition of iodide ions decreases the rate of Cu addition to Cu(111) while increasing the rate to Cu(100), resulting in the formation of microplates. The presence of iodide ions correlates with higher yield of microplates through activation of {100} facets and passivation of {111} facets.

Understanding the Solution-Phase Growth of Cu and Ag Nanowires and Nanocubes from First Principles

Kristen A. Fichthorn et al.

Summary: This article provides an account of the Langmuir Lecture delivered at the virtual meeting of the American Chemical Society, discussing how multiscale theory and first-principles DFT simulations have helped uncover the influences of kinetics and thermodynamics on the shapes of Ag and Cu cubes and nanowires grown in solution. The synergy between theory and experiments has led to significant progress in understanding the formation of nanocubes and nanowires in this study.

Adsorption of ethylenediamine on Cu surfaces: attributes of a successful capping molecule using first-principles calculations

Zihao Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption of ethylenediamine (EDA) on Cu surfaces using quantum density functional theory to understand its role in promoting penta-twinned Cu nanowire growth. The results show that EDA has stronger binding on Cu(100) than on Cu(111), but the surface energy of EDA-covered Cu(111) is lower at all solution-phase EDA chemical potentials. Additionally, EDA is found to protect Cu surfaces from oxidation in water, with Cu(100) showing lower energy barriers for water molecule diffusion.
