Detrital zircon provenance of north Gondwana Palaeozoic sandstones from Saudi Arabia

Guido Meinhold et al.

Summary: The study presents a comprehensive detrital zircon U-Pb age dataset from Palaeozoic sandstones of Saudi Arabia, shedding light on the erosion history of the East African Orogen and sediment recycling in northern Gondwana. The zircon age spectra show five main age populations, with some grains likely originating from igneous rocks of the Arabian-Nubian Shield. Additionally, detrital zircons with various ages, including Eoarchaean ages, suggest a complex history of sediment sources in the region.

Provenance of northern Gondwana Lower Ordovician sandstones (Khabour Formation, northern Iraq) revealed by detrital zircon using LA-ICP-MS dating

Muhamed F. Omer et al.

Summary: Zircon U/Pb provenance data from mature quartz arenites and subarkosic sandstones of the Lower Ordovician Khabour Formation in northern Iraq show predominant Neoproterozoic, Mesoproterozoic, Palaeoproterozoic, and Archean ages, indicating major magmatic events associated with the assembly of northern Gondwana. Additionally, the presence of Cryogenian-Ediacaran ages suggests the unroofing of late-stage granitic rocks from the Arabian-Nubian Shield, while the absence of zircons younger than 490 Ma indicates deposition on the distal shelf of the northern Gondwana passive margin.

Petrographic characteristics of deep marine turbidite sandstones of the Upper Cretaceous Tanjero Formation, Northwestern Sulaimaniyah, Iraq: Implications for provenance and tectonic setting

Hasan Celik et al.

Summary: This study investigated the sedimentary provenance of Upper Cretaceous turbidites of Tanjero Formation through field and laboratory studies, identifying the sandstone portion as mainly composed of chert, siltstone, mudstone, radiolarian chert and radiolarian mudstone fragments. Additionally, the research revealed that the sedimentary source not only includes clastics derived from Lower Cretaceous Qulqula Formation, but also a sedimentary formation from Lower Cretaceous Balambo Formation must exist in the source area.

Exploring a link between the Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum and Neotethys continental arc flare-up

Annique van der Boon et al.

Summary: The Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum (MECO) was a period of global warming lasting about 500 kyr, with an increase in volcanic activity in Iran and Azerbaijan identified as a potential excess carbon source responsible for the warming. The estimated CO2 release during this time period is thought to align with the warming trends observed during the MECO.
