Direct field evidence of autocatalytic iodine release from atmospheric aerosol

Yee Jun Tham et al.

Summary: Reactive iodine, specifically hypoiodous acid (HOI), and interhalogen products (e.g., ICI and IBr), were directly observed in a midlatitude coastal environment, showing faster formation and photolysis rates than previously believed. The photolysis of ICI and IBr increased atomic iodine production rate by 32%, leading to a 10-20% enhancement in daytime average iodine-catalyzed ozone loss rate. These findings highlight the importance of autocatalytic iodine release from marine aerosols in the atmosphere and its impact on atmospheric oxidation capacity.

Role of iodine oxoacids in atmospheric aerosol nucleation

Xu-Cheng He et al.

Summary: This study found that the nucleation rates of iodic acid particles are rapid and can even exceed those of sulfuric acid-ammonia particles. Ion-induced nucleation involves IO3- and the sequential addition of HIO3, while neutral nucleation involves the repeated addition of iodous acid (HIO2) followed by HIO3, with HIO2 playing a key stabilizing role. Freshly formed particles are composed almost entirely of HIO3, which promotes rapid particle growth at the kinetic limit.

Marine iodine emissions in a changing world

Lucy J. Carpenter et al.

Summary: Iodine is a critical trace element that has significant impacts on tropospheric photochemistry, ultimately affecting climate and air quality. Its presence in the ocean as iodide and iodate has been shown to release gaseous iodine through reactions with ozone, with anthropogenic ozone leading to a dramatic increase in iodine emissions over the twentieth century.

Sensitivity of Iodine-Mediated Stratospheric Ozone Loss Chemistry to Future Chemistry-Climate Scenarios

J. Eric Klobas et al.

Summary: The study suggests that future changes in the state of the stratosphere have less impact on iodine-mediated ozone loss compared to chlorine- and bromine-mediated reactions. Additionally, the inclusion of the heterogeneous reaction of ozone with aqueous iodide in stratospheric aerosol significantly enhances iodine and chlorine-mediated ozone loss efficiency.
