Compost and Sewage Sludge for the Improvement of Soil Chemical and Biological Quality of Mediterranean Agroecosystems

Enrica Picariello et al.

Summary: The study validated the use of quality biowaste compost and sewage sludge in a Mediterranean agroecosystem, with biowaste compost showing positive effects on soil organic matter and phosphorous concentrations as well as on microbial community functionality. In contrast, the selected sewage sludge did not benefit the microbial community or pose any dangers related to soil potentially toxic element concentrations and toxicity.

Restoring soil quality of woody agroecosystems in Mediterranean drylands through regenerative agriculture

Raquel Lujan Soto et al.

Summary: The study conducted a participatory monitoring project in southeast Spain and found that regenerative agriculture can improve soil quality, with green manure and organic amendments being effective practices. Combining no tillage with organic amendments showed the best results, and all regenerative agriculture treatments maintained crop nutritional status.

A seven-year experiment in a vegetable crops sequence: Effects of replacing mineral fertilizers with Biowaste compost on crop productivity, soil organic carbon and nitrates concentrations

Luigi Morra et al.

Summary: The intensification of agriculture has distorted the perception of soil fertility, with a focus on chemical components and chemical fertilizers as a major option. The decline in soil organic matter content threatens the sustainability of intensive agricultural systems. Increasing soil organic carbon is seen as a potential way to improve crop yield and quality.

Principles of Sustainable Agriculture: Defining Standardized Reference Points

Ana Trigo et al.

Summary: There is no doubt about the necessity for a shift towards sustainable agriculture, with agriculture being a major contributor to environmental impacts. Through an inductive qualitative content analysis of various definitions and theories, four fundamental principles for sustainable agriculture were identified: integrated management, dynamic balance, regenerative design, and social development. To make our current agricultural systems more efficient and sustainable, better utilization of natural and human resources is crucial. This work provides guidelines for decision-making and methodology application in the context of sustainable agriculture.

Circular economy implementation in the agricultural sector: Definition, strategies and indicators

Juan F. Velasco-Munoz et al.

Summary: This study adapts the circular economy framework to the agricultural sector, analyzes indicators for measuring circularity performance, defines CE applied to agriculture, and proposes future research paths and changes for implementing CE in agricultural production systems. It also assesses circularity indicators and emphasizes the need for internationally recognized standards and adequate units of measurement for meaningful studies in agriculture.

Regenerative farming and human wellbeing: Are subjective wellbeing measures useful indicators for sustainable farming systems?

Kimberly Brown et al.

Summary: The text argues for the inclusion of measures examining the health and wellbeing of farm managers in sustainable agriculture indicators, as good farmer wellbeing may indicate a level of functioning across all components of the farm system. However, few indicator frameworks currently measure farmer wellbeing, mainly due to a lack of exploration of the linkages between farming systems and wellbeing. The text explores the utility of subjective wellbeing measures for inclusion in agricultural sustainability indicator frameworks, using regenerative agriculture as a case example.

Poultry Manure as an Organic Fertilizer with or without Biochar Amendment: Influence on Growth and Heavy Metal Accumulation in Lettuce and Spinach and Soil Nutrients

Hira Javaid Siddiqu et al.

Summary: The study found that adding poultry manure or FYM biochar to soil significantly decreased biomass production of lettuce but increased plant biomass when mixed with wood-derived biochar. In spinach, adding poultry manure or FYM biochar increased aboveground plant biomass. The concentration of heavy metals in lettuce did not decrease when using wood-derived biochar, while in spinach, co-amendment with wood-derived biochar reduced heavy metal concentration.
