Amine-Boranes as Transfer Hydrogenation and Hydrogenation Reagents: A Mechanistic Perspective

Samantha Lau et al.

Summary: This review discusses the use of H3N.BH3 and its analogues as sacrificial hydrogen donors in transfer hydrogenation reactions, distinguishing between classical TH, nonclassical TH, and hydrogenation pathways. Experimental and computational analyses can be employed to verify or discount mechanisms, displaying how the operating pathway can be disrupted by various factors, leading to nontrivial assignment of the mechanism.

Hydroalkylation of Unactivated Olefins via Visible-Light-Driven Dual Hydrogen Atom Transfer Catalysis

Guangyue Lei et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the radical hydroalkylation of unactivated olefins using visible-light-driven dual HAT catalysis, with catalytic amounts of amine-borane and in situ generated thiol as the hydrogen atom abstractor and donor. Experimental and computational studies support the proposed mechanism, suggesting that hydrogen bonding between the amine-borane and substrates improves reaction efficiency.

A radical approach for the selective C-H borylation of azines

Ji Hye Kim et al.

Summary: A new strategy for the borylation of azines has been developed, utilizing stable and inexpensive amine-borane reagents in conjunction with photocatalysis. This approach allows for selective borylation of nitrogen-containing aromatic heterocycles through the formation of highly reactive boryl radicals, providing an alternative tactic for sp(2) carbon-boron bond assembly. The strong nucleophilic character of the amine-boryl radicals enables predictable and site-selective carbon-boron bond formation in azine structures, leading to the preparation of borylated materials that are otherwise difficult to access.
