Mitigating the risks of indirect land use change (ILUC) related deforestation from industrial palm oil expansion by sharing land access with displaced crop and cattle farmers

Badrul Azhar et al.

Summary: The European Commission criticizes palm oil production for its high ILUC risk, while major palm oil-producing countries claim it will hinder the adoption of sustainable practices. To mitigate this risk, a strategy of mandatory sharing of production land with landless/displaced farmers is proposed, aiming to reduce deforestation and enhance food security in addition to aligning with palm oil certification schemes.

Oil palm cultivation, household welfare, and exposure to economic risk in the Indonesian small farm sector

Nadjia Mehraban et al.

Summary: The cultivation of oil palm can improve the economic level of smallholder farmers and reduce the economic risk of households. Compared to other crops, oil palm requires less labor, allowing families to engage in other economic activities.
