Parity-Time symmetric system based on the thermoacoustic effect

Gaelle Poignand et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigates an acoustic Parity-Time (PT) symmetric system based on thermoacoustic amplification process. By adjusting parameters, impedance balance and PT-symmetry condition are achieved, leading to a balance between gain and loss within a certain frequency range. Spontaneous PT-symmetry breaking and the existence of exceptional points characteristic of PT-symmetric systems are explored in the study.

Analytical modeling of one-dimensional resonant asymmetric and reciprocal acoustic structures as Willis materials

Jean-Philippe Groby et al.

Summary: This work explores the closed forms of effective parameters in Willis materials through studying three asymmetric and reciprocal one-dimensional resonant configurations, demonstrating differences in coupling coefficients. The study highlights the way in which Willis coupling occurs in spatially asymmetric unit cells, as well as the absence of odd Willis coupling in reciprocal configurations. These findings are validated against experimental and numerical results in the three configurations, paving the way for novel physical understanding and engineering use of Willis acoustic materials.

Acoustic Willis meta-atom beyond the bounds of passivity and reciprocity

Choonlae Cho et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new type of Willis metamaterial that can precisely control acoustic waves and overcome the traditional limitations of passivity and reciprocity. By introducing independent kernels on a virtualized platform, artificial polarization is achieved, allowing for control of all four constitutive parameters.

Band structure and effective properties of one-dimensional thermoacoustic Bloch waves

Haitian Hao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dispersion characteristics and effective properties of acoustic waves in a one-dimensional duct with periodic thermoacoustic coupling elements, showing nonreciprocal thermoacoustic Bloch waves and a zero refractive index. The presence of a static spatial temperature gradient induces loss of reciprocity, leading to interesting implications for acoustic cloaking. The study provides a comprehensive theoretical model and in-depth numerical analysis of the propagation properties of this thermoacoustically coupled, tunable, one-dimensional metamaterial.
