Deep Learning for Latent Space Data Assimilation in Subsurface Flow Systems

Syamil Mohd Razak et al.

Summary: We propose a new deep learning architecture for efficient reduced-order implementation of ensemble data assimilation in learned low-dimensional latent spaces. The method uses deep convolutional autoencoders to map complex and high-dimensional parameters onto a low-dimensional latent space. In addition, a low-dimensional data latent space is constructed to predict the observable response of each model parameter realization. The two mappings are trained together, resulting in a joint data-parameter manifold that captures the most salient information for effective data assimilation.

Conveying Emotions Through Device-Initiated Touch

Marc Teyssier et al.

Summary: This article explores the design space of device-initiated touch for conveying emotions, using an interactive system to reproduce a collection of human touch characteristics. The results suggest that certain combinations of touch characteristics are associated with the perception of different emotions, and touch seems to be the predominant signal in non-congruent emotional contexts.

Haptic Perception, Mechanics, and Material Technologies for Virtual Reality

Shantonu Biswas et al.

Summary: Emerging virtual and augmented reality technologies have the potential to transform human activities by giving tangible form to digital data, services, and information. Haptic technologies play a critical role in enabling interaction in virtual environments. The challenge lies in engineering haptic technologies for virtual reality to match the complex capabilities of human touch perception.

Covid-19, social distancing and the 'scientisation' of touch: Exploring the changing social and emotional contexts of touch and their implications for social work

Lorraine Green et al.

Summary: The 'scientific' responses to Covid-19 in the UK had negative impacts on touch forms/practices and emotions, leading to issues such as touch deprivation, exacerbated abusive touch, and potentially lethal touch in care-giving contexts. These consequences disproportionately affect vulnerable and marginalised groups, including service users who may belong to multiple disadvantaged groups simultaneously.
