Brain Morphology Associated With Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms in 2,551 Children From the General Population

Cees J. Weeland et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between OC symptoms and brain morphology in children, finding that those with probable OCD had larger thalami and a positive association between OC symptoms and thickness of the right inferior parietal cortex. However, this association disappeared after adjusting for total behavioral problems. Additionally, higher SOCS scores were negatively correlated with intracranial volume.

Volumetric alterations in subregions of the amygdala in adults with major depressive disorder

Hyeyoung Kim et al.

Summary: The study examined the volume differences in each amygdala subregion in adults with and without MDD, using automatic segmentation of the nine nuclei of the amygdala. Patients with MDD showed significantly lower volumes in the entire amygdala and subregions compared to healthy volunteers, with no significant associations with antidepressant use, illness duration, or depression severity.

From motivation, decision-making to action: An fMRI study on suicidal behavior in patients with major depressive disorder

Xinlei Ji et al.

Summary: Neural mechanisms underlying disadvantageous risk decision making were explored in un-medicated major depressive disorder patients with recent suicide attempts. Patients with a history of suicide attempts showed higher pain avoidance and risk aversion in decision making tasks compared to non-suicidal patients, with distinct patterns of brain activation. The findings suggest that differential insula and dlPFC activation may contribute to the conservative decision-making and extreme choices such as suicide in this population.

Smaller volume of posterior thalamic nuclei in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder

Jinhyung Jurng et al.

Summary: The study reported a reduced volume of the posterior thalamic nuclei in a large sample of medication-free OCD patients for the first time. The results suggest that the volume of posterior thalamic nuclei may reflect different pathophysiological mechanisms of OCD subtypes related to the age of onset. Further studies are needed to clarify the relationship between thalamic alterations and the onset age of OCD, particularly in pediatric samples.

Associations between subregional thalamic volume and brain pathology in autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease

Enmanuelle Pardilla-Delgado et al.

Summary: Histopathological reports suggest that different subregions of the thalamus are not uniformly affected by Alzheimer's disease, indicating that thalamic volumetric reductions in Alzheimer's may not be consistent even in preclinical or prodromal stages. Therefore, the thalamus should be considered as multiple distinct subregions rather than a single unitary structure in Alzheimer's disease research.
