Driverless shuttle pilots: Lessons for automated transit technology deployment

Mahmood Mahmoodi Nesheli et al.

Summary: The rollout of autonomous vehicles provides a valuable opportunity to evaluate user perception of a technology expected to disrupt urban mobility worldwide. Transit agencies are increasingly deploying driverless shuttle pilot programs to assess how AV technology can enhance transit service, but there is a lack of comprehensive guidelines for ensuring the effectiveness of these programs. While previous deployments received positive feedback, few have accurately simulated real-world transit conditions, indicating the technology is still in its early stages.

Empirical study on car-following characteristics of commercial automated vehicles with different headway settings*

Xiaowei Shi et al.

Summary: The study analyzed tradeoffs between safety, mobility, and stability of automated vehicles using a linear car following model. Empirical experiments with commercial AVs confirmed the theoretical predictions, showing a balance between safety and mobility, and the impact of time lag on string stability. Field experiments also revealed issues with the predictive power of the linear model, highlighting the need for further research on nonlinearity and stochasticity in AV modeling.
