CARBON CYCLE EVOLUTION BEFORE AND AFTER THE GREAT OXIDATION OF THE ATMOSPHERE

Don E. Canfield

Summary: The study investigates the activity level and ecology of the ancient biosphere by analyzing the isotopic composition of organic and inorganic carbon in ancient rocks. The model suggests that before the Great Oxidation Event, the burial rates of organic matter in marine sediments were lower, indicating a potentially subdued biosphere activity level.

Summary: The carbon deposition during the Palaeoproterozoic era has led to the formation of abundant graphite deposits and long-term ore deposition, including the uranium currently produced from Mesoproterozoic deposits nucleated upon older Palaeoproterozoic graphite.
