Last deglaciation flooding events in the Southern Carpathians as revealed by the study of cave deposits from Muierilor Cave, Romania

Ionut-Cornel Mirea et al.

Summary: This study presents a multi-archive interdisciplinary study of fossil mammals from Muierilor Cave in Romania, indicating a high abundance and diversity of fossil mammals synchronous with early modern humans. The research reconstructs cave evolution over time and suggests that the Southern Carpathians may have acted as a glacial refuge for cave bears as late as approximately 22 kyr B.P., based on U/Th dating of speleothems.

Attraction in the Dark: The Magnetism of Speleothems

Joshua M. Feinberg et al.

Summary: The magnetism in stalagmites and flowstone can be used to chronicle high-resolution geomagnetic behavior and environmental change, originating from soils and other forms of magnetic minerals. These magnetic minerals become aligned with Earth's magnetic field before being fixed within the speleothem.

Cave Decorating with Microbes: Geomicrobiology of Caves

Daniel S. Jones et al.

Summary: Microorganisms are crucial for the formation and biogeochemistry of caves, playing a role in element cycling and mineral deposition. While some caves have abundant energy sources supporting robust microbial ecosystems, most are oligotrophic environments with slow-growing microbial communities. Microbes contribute to cave formation by corroding limestone bedrock and catalyzing mineral precipitation.

Uranium-Thorium Dating of Speleothems

Kathleen A. Wendt et al.

Summary: Speleothems serve as important timekeepers for Earth's climate history, with U-Th dating techniques providing exceptional temporal precision. By using mass spectrometric methods for measuring U and Th isotopes, researchers have been able to investigate past climate, environment, and Earth system changes at high accuracy levels. This has led to significant advancements in studying ancient civilizations and developing calibration for the C-14 timescale.
